Summary: This course is designed to help students build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people.








Course description: This course is a one year course and introduces students to the childcare sector. To obtain the Early Years Educator license to practice students must successfully complete this course and progress onto the Diploma in Childcare and Education
It is run over two days per week in addition to some 'block weeks' of work placement which are integral to the course and will provide opportunities for students to develop their confidence, self-esteem and practical skills in a range of settings, such a schools, nurseries and children's centres.









Entry requirements: Applicants should have five GCSEs at Grade A* - C including English and Maths, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development at Merit or Distinction level.
Applicants will also need to demonstrate interest and enthusiasm for working with children.









Learning outcome: The Certificate provides learners with a broad foundation of knowledge and skills within early years childcare and education in preparation for progression to the Diploma.  









Objective: Units  include:

Children's development from conception to seven years

Children's health and well being

Play and Learning

a competence based professional Practice Portfolio covering the above areas
The course includes 400 hours of assessed practice, in a variety of settings, over one year.









Assessment: The course will be internally and externally assessed by a range of methods. This will include; direct observation within a workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task/exam set by the awarding body.









Academic progression: Students will progress onto the  Diploma and then the Foundation Degree in Early Years at City College or a similar higher education course.









Career progression: Students can progress into a variety of professions including becoming a practitioner in a children’s centre, day nurseries, nursery schools or reception classes in primary schools or registered childminders and nannies.
