Course programme
On the programme you will learn about children at different stages of their development. You will also learn how to care for and educate children under the age of 8 years old. Units include:
- Observation and assessment of babies and children
- Physical, emotional and social development
- Children's health, nutrition and play
Training placements with babies and children form an integral part of the programme. You will attend college three days per week and training placement two days per week. An external exam is taken at the end fo Year 2 in addition to continual assessment of practical and written work.
Brief information about the Course:
Students will study the subjects listed below and a minimum attendance of 80% is required in each unit.
Unit 1 - An introduction to working with children.
Unit 2 - Development from conception to age 16 years.
Unit 3 - Supporting children.
Unit 4 - Keeping children safe.
Unit 5 - The principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children.
Unit 6 - Promoting a healthy environment for children.
Unit 7 - Play and learning in children's education.
Unit 8 - Caring for children.
Unit 9 - Development of professional skills within children's education.
Unit 10 - Research into childcare, education and development.
Unit 11 - Care of sick children.
Unit 12 - Nutrition and healthy food for children.
Unit 13 - Child, family and outside world.
Unit 14 - Working with children with special needs.
Unit 15 - Developing children's (3-8 years)mathematical skills.
Unit 16 - Developing children's (3-8 years) communication, language and literacy skills.
Unit 17 - International approaches towards children's education.
Unit 18 - Working with babies from birth to 12 months.
Unit 19 - Multi-agency working with children.
Unit 20 - Supporting children with English as an additional language.
You must achieve 12 units
Units 1-9 all mandatory and three optional units.
Training Placements:
Two days a week placement throughout the course with occasional week long placements. Students will do a total of 125 days of placement. Work placements provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable insight into a variety of work settings with children in the following age ranges:
0-1 minimum 15 days
1-3 years, 11 months minimum 25 days
4-7 years, 11 months minimum 40 days
any age range the remaining 40 days
Placements are arranged as appropriate in Private Family Homes, Nurseries, Infant Schools, Pre-School Groups, Day-Care Facilities, Crèche Facilities. To comply with national standards and legislation all students will be screened by the Criminal Records Bureau.
AdditionalityAdditional Qualifications:
Key Skills in Information Technology and Communications that may be accredited at level 2 or level 3 as appropriate.
Throughout the course students will complete national assignments which are marked internally and moderated externally. There are also external examination during the course to include a short answer test and a multiple choice question paper. Practical competence is assessed continuously by placement performance and reports from supervisors.
