Introduction
This award is a part time course for experienced Teaching assistants and/or those who have a range of responsibilities within the school on a voluntary basis perhaps.
The title --Teaching Assistant- is the generic term for classroom assistant, learning support assistant and special needs assistant.
Teaching assistants work with teachers in classrooms within primary, special and secondary schools supporting the child- s learning.
Some teaching assistants may have a general support role, while others will have specific responsibilities for an individual child or age group.
You may be:
Already working with children in a different setting and want to move into school setting
A mature person already working in a school, assisting teaching staff, on a paid or voluntary basis and who does not have a relevant qualification
New to the child care and education sector and want to work with children at the Foundation Stage or at Key Stages 1-4
Already working as a teaching assistant and hold a level 3 qualification but you want to update your knowledge and skills and gain a recognised qualification.
Course Content
This award has two units.
Unit 1 The role of the Teaching Assistant (how it has changed and devloped)
Supporting teaching and Learning
National Frameworks and Strategies
Managing positive behaviour
Building good positive relationships with the children
The importance of monitoring learning
Unit 2 Key Issues in "working in schools"
Developing team work in schools
Keeping children safe - safe guarding children
Legislation and policies in school
Each unit is separately assessed and can be separately certificated.
You must successfully achieve the mandatory unit and one optional unit in order to gain the full award.
Entry Requirements
CACHE recommends that you should:
Be 18 years or above
Have sufficient general education to undertake a Level 3 qualification, for example achieving GCSE or equivalent at C grade or above
Be working in a school in a paid, voluntary or placement capacity at Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1-4 for a minimum of 60 hours per unit.
Duration
You will be required to attend College for one half day a week.
Each unit takes one College term.
Assessment
Work is assessed through two written assignments

Progression
When you have completed your awards you may like to consider progressing onto the Foundation Degrree in Education (for Teaching Assisatnts) and then work towards a full BA Hons degree and a teacing qualification!
