The biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions is the built environment, accounting for up to 50% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Across the world there is a need to cut GHG emissions by 50% or more in order to stabilise global concentrations by 2100. This programme is designed to equip students with the skills and techniques needed to reduce built environment carbon emissions, to improve sustainability and to adapt to a changing climate. The overall aim of the programme is to develop graduates who understand how decisions regarding building design, construction and operations affect carbon dioxide emissions for new and existing buildings. The programme focuses extensively on lifecycle issues relating to energy, carbon and monetary
cost of projects and considers longevity, maintenance, energy use, carbon emissions, value and performance. Issues of climate change and sustainability will be discussed alongside elements of design, performance, behaviour, policy and legislation. Flexible study options This programme can be studied full-time, part-time or via Independent Distance Learning (IDL), ideal for those in employment or with other commitments, providing flexible study options that fit around work or family. As an IDL student you will not be required to attend any lectures, tutorials or other events at any of Heriot-Watt University’s campuses. Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building DesignThis programme is delivered by the Royal Academy of Engineering Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design. This is one of four such Centres established at UK universities that jointly form a national network to demonstrate and exchange best practice in teaching and research for the sustainable built environment.
Programme duration- Full time - 1 year
- Part-time - 2 years
- Independent Distance Learning - 2-7 years
*An IDL programme - whether at PgDip or MSc level - can be completed in a minimum of 2 years. On average, our PgDip programmes studied via IDL are completed in 2-3 years, while MSc programmes are completed in 2.5-7 years. Most students intend to complete their studies via IDL within 2-3 years.
Professional recognitionThe Carbon and Energy Management programme has been granted Chartered Energy Manager accreditation by the Energy Institute (EI).
Industry linksThe Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design has excellent industry links, and an industrial panel which serves to inform and guide teaching and learning activities. Staff within the Institute are actively engaged in a variety of research projects relating to building design, specification, management and operation. A number of site visits and industry case studies are used throughout the 8 taught courses.
