Designed primarily for existing healthcare practitioners, this degree covers non invasive methods in cardiopulmonary exercise testing to accurately assess the performance of the heart and lungs of patients at rest and during exercise.
A distinctive and integral feature of the MSc is the focus on both in depth practical experience and comprehensive, up to date knowledge. Students will study key concepts in leadership and management, as well as legal and ethical issues related to biomedical research and clinical practice. You will also gain a solid grounding in research methodologies required for biomedical research.
Our industry experienced tutors place an emphasis on work based experience and candidates are normally required to work in a cardiology non invasive department.

How to apply
Qualifications
We welcome applications from graduates with a 2:2 honours degree, or an equivalent qualification, in a health or science-based subject
Applicants normally have a background in clinical physiology but those from other healthcare professions (e.g. registered nurse, clinical exercise physiologist, physiotherapist and medical practitioners) are also welcomed to apply
We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications and individuals with a minimum of three years' work experience in clinical physiology iew,...

Course programme
Course content
What will you study on the MSc/PGCert/PGDip Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing?
This course covers both theory and practice of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and cardiac rehabilitation. In addition, you will study key concepts in leadership and management as well as legal and ethical issues related to biomedical research and clinical practice.
What will you gain?
As part of the course, you will gain a solid grounding in experimental design and statistics and an opportunity to undertake an independent research project under guidance and supervision of an academic.
ModulesAdvanced Signal Processing (15 credits) - Compulsory
This module aims to provide students with a specialised body of current knowledge in the field of signal process methods used in clinical physiology, exploring concepts of signal processing for diagnosis and monitoring. Gaining confidence in the interpretation of diagnostic information, students will become familiar with specialised and advanced techniques and technologies. The module leads students towards a greater understanding of new methods for analysis of physiological signals.
Biomedical Ethics and Law (15 credits) - CompulsoryThe purpose of this module is to provide insight into a range of ethical and legal issues that relate to professional practice, research with human and animal subjects and to human reproduction — particularly various forms of reproductive technology. It will equip students with a broad overview of the relevant current UK ethical and legal regulations for research using human tissues. The ethical issues present in the rapidly developing area of genetic technology, including genetic testing and selection, genetic engineering, and the concept of genetic disease, will also be explored.By applying theoretical considerations to practice, the module will then explore ways in which, ethical and legal issues can be critically analysed and addressed.
Cardiac Rehabilitation (15 credits) - CompulsoryThis module aims to provide students with the knowledge and understanding required to safely contribute to the treatment, exercise prescription and rehabilitation of patients with peripheral muscle dysfunction, chronic heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or cardiac thoracic surgery.
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (15 credits) - CompulsoryThis module is concerned with the knowledge and understanding required to safely contribute to the exercise testing and interpretation of patients with heart diseases, pulmonary vascular diseases, peripheral arterial diseases, ventilatory disorders, muscle disorders.
Cardiopulmonary Pathophysiology (15 credits) - CompulsoryThis module equips students with the knowledge and understanding required to safely contribute to the exercise testing and interpretation of patients with heart diseases, pulmonary vascular diseases, peripheral arterial diseases, ventilatory disorders and muscle disorders.
Cardiopulmonary Pharmacology (15 credits) - CompulsoryStudents are provided with the knowledge and understanding required to safely contribute to the role pharmacology plays in cardiopulmonary exercise testing of patients with heart diseases, pulmonary vascular diseases, peripheral arterial diseases, ventilatory disorders, or muscle disorders.
Experimental Design and Statistics (15 credits) - CompulsoryThis module aims to provide students with the tools required to design effective and efficient experiments and to test scientific hypotheses. The module will also equip students with the tools necessary for statistical analysis in a hypothesis testing context.
Laboratory Leadership and Management (15 credits) - CompulsoryThe purpose of this module is to provide students with an understanding of, and the tools to apply current theories and approaches to leadership and management in order to enable them to effect positive change in a team or organisation that they lead or manage.
Research Project (60 credits) - CompulsoryThis module aims to develop skills in the planning and execution of an analytical study and in the critical evaluation of real research results, drawing on knowledge acquired from other modules. In addition, the module will develop student’s communication skills to enable them to communicate their findings both in written and oral form.
