This apprenticeship could see you working for a construction company, employed as a wood specialist on any number of projects. So if you are practical and creative with the ability to work hard indoors or outside then this could be the apprenticeship for you. Apprentices who qualify in carpentry and joinery would work in the housing market, industrial construction or in exhibition and shop fitting jobs. You will learn how to complete a first and second fit and how to complete machining and formwork. You could choose to work for a large construction company or in maintenance for a college or housing association or even set up on your own and become self employed.

About this course

Entry criteria varies depending on the framework that you are studying and the needs of the employer, however a good level of secondary education is expected and many employers expect you to have maths and English GCSE at a C grade or above. Employers also look for skills like motivation, good interpersonal skills, good communication skills and a willingness to learn and will set their own specifications depending on the role.

Course programme

On completion of the apprenticeship, you could choose to work for a large construction company or in maintenance for a college or housing association. You will be suitable for the following roles: Site Carpenter, Carpenter, Shuttering Carpenter, Maintenance Carpenter. Or you might consider becoming self-employed.

Additional information

The duration of an apprenticeship will vary depending on the needs of the employer but you will be required to complete qualifications during the period usually with set study days. As part of the apprenticeship, there will be a number of specific skills that your employer or college tutor will monitor and observe to prove that you reached a certain level of understanding.
