Course Overview
This course is for those seeking a basic craft qualification. The course acts as agood introduction to the trade and will give you the opportunity to develop the skills you will need to progress to the Level 2 Diploma, and possible employment.
Course Structure
This is a one year course with attendance at college for 2 days a week
The programme is delivered in units (6 practical & 6 theory), all of which must be successfully completed to achieve the qualification.
Some of the topics covered will be:
- Health & Safety
- Using power tools
- Joinery
- Planning and organisation
- Handling and storing materials
Qualification Aims
This qualification is a good foundation for starting an apprenticeship. A Level 1 Diploma will be awarded on successful completion. Students can then progress onto the next level in the second year.
Assessments/Examinations
The course will be continuously assessed following a period of training with assessments covering practical and written work, together with assignments

Students will be expected to provide:
- Steel toecap boots
- Simple calculator
- Set squares 30°/60°and 45°(large)
- Scale rule
- 2H pencils
- A4 note pad
The cost of the equipment will vary according to quality. As a guide you will probably spend£30-£40 on the above.
