Course programme

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) is the starting point for all learner motorcyclists.

CBT is not a test but a practical course of training you are required to complete, there is no theory test although you will be required to have a sound knowledge of the Highway Code. The CBT course includes five elements of which each element has to be completed satisfactorily in turn. You can only move on to each element in turn when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level.

The course starts at 09:00 and finishes approximately 17:00 if you successfully complete all of the modules. Most people do get through CBT on their first attempt, but if you do not, we will re-book you for further training and assessment at no further cost.

Please Note: When attending for your course, you will need to bring your UK licence with you (both the paper counterpart and the photo card, if it is the photo card licence), if you have the old style (paper only licence) we will need to see some other form of ID., such as your passport. We will also check your eyesight to make sure you can read a car number plate at 20.5 metres, so make sure you bring your glasses or contact lenses if normally worn.

We do supply you with one of our bikes and we will also supply you with a motorcycle safety helmet, jacket and gloves if required. If you wish to use your own bike for the CBT then arrangements with your dealer can be made to deliver the bike directly to us for you. If you are supplying your own bike you will also need to have valid motorcycle insurance and valid road tax displayed on the bike, valid MOT certificate (if your bike is more than three years old) and full sized L-plates clearly displayed both front and rear.

Please be aware that you are not legally allowed to ride your bike to us unless you are in possession of one of the following:
• Valid CBT certificate (if just renewing your CBT)
• Full UK car licence (only if you are going to take the course on a moped and you have held your licence prior to February 2001).
• Full UK bike licence.

When you have satisfactorily completed the course you will be given your CBT Certificate (DL196) and this will validate your provisional entitlement on your driving licence, although L - Plates must be clearly displayed front and rear of your motorcycle, you must not carry a pillion passenger and riding on motorways is forbidden. The DL196 is valid for two years, after which, either re-take CBT or pass the motorcycle test.
