About this course

CCNA is required and experience of network administration and management is preferred. Students must have prior experience of configuring Cisco routers. It would be preferable to have completed Semester 5 of CCNP: Building Scalable Networks.

What's the course about?

Learners will be taught the process and practice of design, technical troubleshooting and fault diagnosis to enable them to build a multilayer switched network.

The course covers the following:

  • Understanding the technology of multilayer switched networks
  • Implementing and configuring multilayer switched networks
  • Designing multilayer switched networks
  • Troubleshooting multilayer switched co networks

Practical and theoretical labs will include:

Enterprise Composite Model for network design; physical, data-link and network layer technologies: role of switches in campus infrastructure, server farm, enterprise edge ,network management modules; switching database manager; VLANs and managed VLAN services on a switched network; VLAN trunking protocols and switch identification; T802.1Q tunnelling operation; spanning tree protocols; Cisco route switch processes; interVLAN routing; module and router redundancies; IP multicasting; Cisco AVID and voice quality issues; Cisco IP telephony; routing multicast traffic; monitoring and security; transparency; configuring VLANs and VMPs; configuration of Fast Ethernet GiGabit Ethernet for interswitch connections; quality of service requirements.

The course is delivered via blended learning, which comprises lectures with on-screen demos and Cisco academy curriculum material with hands on lab exercises. You will be assessed on practical lab activities and a portfolio of work that you will build up. You will be assessed via a portfolio and online Cisco exams.

How long is the course and when will it be taught?

CCNP 2 (semester 6) takes 15 weeks to complete either by day release or one evening per week for 30 weeks.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

By completing further units, you may progress to Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) status. In addition there are progression routes onto NVQ Level 4 courses and graduate apprenticeships. The course can also lead to systems administration and management roles in small to medium sized IT infrastructures.
