Course programme
The Cambridge CELTA course is an internationally recognised introductory training and certification programme. It is designed to give you a thorough grounding in all aspects of teaching English language to adults.
What qualifications or experience do I need ?The course is designed for people who: have little or no teaching experience and would like to enter the fields of EFL or ESOL: are English teachers wishing to obtain an internationally recognised qualification or are teachers with experience from any discipline who wish to extend and develop their existing skills, gaining a subject specific (CELTA) teaching qualification. To participate in the course you must: be at least 18 years of age; be educated to a level suitable for University/Higher Education entrance (A levels or equivalent); have an awareness of language and a written and spoken competence in English that will enable you to follow and complete the course; be interviewed and pass a language awareness test.
What will I study ?The course comprises input sessions and workshops which include: classroom management skills; understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and the learner; language analysis (grammar and phonology); teaching methodology, ideas and techniques applicable to ESOL/EFL teaching; using and evaluating authentic and published materials; course and syllabus design; the nature and role of FE and Adult Education; teaching basic literacy.
How will I be assessed ?There is no final examination because you are assessed continuously over the course. The assessment includes: teaching groups of EFL/ESOL students at two different levels; the ability to plan lessons and reflect on and evaluate your own teaching; four written assignments related to the course input; preparation of a course portfolio of work. An external Cambridge assessor moderates every course.
How do I join the course ?To apply, please contact louise.canham@barnetsouthgate.ac.uk or call on 0208 200 8300 extn 4508 for a teaching information pack.
