Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
Manchester Academy of English is accredited for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) by the British Council and a member of English UK, the association for British Council accredited English Language Schools in the UK. Our CELTA courses are run by Manchester Academy Teacher Training (UK) Ltd, and validated by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) which has a well-earned reputation for academic excellence; its qualifications are recognised and accepted by teaching institutions world-wide.
Our teachers and trainers are qualified and initiated to the British Council standards and have extensive experience of teaching English both in the UK and overseas. Through their practical skill, knowledge, and personal qualities, they provide learners and trainees with guidance, support and encouragement throughout the course. We aim to enable you to achieve your full potential.
The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
Our 18-week part-time intensive initial teacher training courses lead to the award of the internationally recognised certificate. The Cambridge certificate is an essential first step in a career in TESOL. The qualification is an essential minimum requirement for teachers in a British Council accredited school. Successful participants will be able to use this qualification to teach in schools in the UK and overseas. Over 10,000 candidates complete a CELTA course each year.
How am I assessed?
Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the course and there is no final examination. Each course is moderated by an external assessor, who is appointed by Cambridge ESOL. Assessment consists of 3 components. They are: Assessment of Teaching Practice, Written Assignments and Professional Development. Candidates are assessed on their overall ability over 6 hours of teaching practice, working at two levels of ability. There are four written assignments. Two assignments explore aspects of teaching and learning English at adult level, one involves work on the language system of English and one is a reflection on classroom teaching. Professional Development is assessed by the candidate's overall performance on the course. In order to gain the qualification, candidates must pass all three components. There are three grades - Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'.
One-Day CELTA Taster
This is a one-day (six hour) introductory course designed and delivered by experienced Academy teachers for trainees with or without teaching experience, who want a clearer idea of what the profession involves before committing themselves to a longer, more expensive certificate course. The day is full of practical tasks and by the end of the day, some of the questions below will have been answered:
Who learns English, why and where? How does it feel to be a beginner? What needs to be learned? How much about English do I know? and do I need to know?
What makes an effective teacher?
Students who choose to follow on the Taster Day with the full certificate course will have the full cost of the one-day course deducted from the fee.
The part-time 16-week course:
Includes 6 hours of observations of experienced teachers to be carried out during the day. Includes 6 hours of assessed teaching practice.
Includes Teaching practice with feedback on Wednesday evenings from 5.30 to 8.30.
