Course programme

The CIJ Summer School 2009 is for anyone who needs to upgrade their investigative skills, in finance, business, politics, protecting sources and using the Freedom of Information Acts. The School will bring together the world’s leading trainers for one of the most valuable cutting edge investigative research techniques: Computer Assisted Reporting (CAR).

CAR is the application of spreadsheet and database software to gather, analyse and present complex data for news and in-depth investigations. It empowers journalists and researchers to unearth major scoops in governmental and industry databases, statistical releases, and other complex data sets.

We are the only providers of CAR training in the UK, and run the leading conference for computer-related investigations in Europe.

This year’s workshops will be streamed; allowing beginners, intermediaries and advanced-level delegates the opportunity to learn at their own pace.

Delegates will also get the chance to mix with investigative journalists from Britain’s leading media organisations, and from all over the world.

Hot topics we will be covering this year include:

→ Advanced Internet research;
→ Finding major stories in government databases;
→ Computer security;
→ Undercover reporting;
→ Working in dangerous environments;
→ Finding and making sense of business and financial filings;
→ New threats in libel and privacy law;
→ How to protect sources;
→ Project management;
→ Telling the story;
→ Finding experts;
→ Effective use of Freedom of Information legislation, and many more.

Price scheme:

→ £450 - Full price;
→ £300 - NUJ or similar members;
→ £100 - Full-time students.
