Course programme

A module introducing essential skills is the foundation for the programme, providing you with the knowledge and skills of pre-hospital practice, as well as building competence in clinical mathematics, communication and patient history taking.

Building on this, the programme then introduces you to the basic scientific principles that enable an understanding of the structure and function of the body in health and disease.

You will examine the importance of accountability and responsibility in the areas of ethics, legislation and professional duty of care, as well as develop your knowledge, understanding and psychomotor skills in pathophysiology and patient assessment. This will enable you to assess a patient safely and accurately in the pre-hospital environment.

There is an opportunity to demonstrate clinical competence within practice by exposure to, and reflection on, essential practice experiences.

How will I study?

The course is delivered primarily online via a Virtual Learning Environment so that is can meet the needs of Emergency Medical Technicians and Emergency Care Assistants who work shift patterns.

Each module is usually delivered over a twelve week period. In addition to online study, you will be expected to attend between three and twelve full days of timetabled university teaching for each module. This will take the form of lectures, informal discussions and tutorials.

The final module is practice-based and will take place within your current ambulance service trust.
