About the subject

The Level 2 Diploma in Child Care & Education helps you to train as an assistant, in a supervised role, to promote the care learning and development of children and young people within the age range 0-16yrs. It will give you a secure foundation of knowledge and practical skills to work with children and young people, their families and other professionals. It involves studying the development, education and care of children aged 0-16yrs. It also introduces assessment techniques, both formal and informal, of children's particular needs.
This course has a very practical application and is a well respected vocational qualification which leads you towards licence to practice upon completion, when seeking employment in a variety of settings such as Day Nursery, Pre-school, Private Homes, Schools, After - School and Holiday Play & Activity schemes. It is also a route into The Level 3 Diploma in Child Care & Education.

Learning Styles
Two days a week - workplace based practical training, and assessment mostly working with children in the 0-8yr age range.
Three days a week - college based - practical workshop lessons, tutor led sessions, small group work, presentations, discussions and individual student research and study.
Homework - preparing work to carry out in your work place training setting in addition to theoretical assignment research and coursework.

Subject combinations and progression
The Level 2 - Diploma in Child Care is a four course choice. Students will continue to develop their Key Skills as appropriate. Basic Food Hygiene Certificate and Paediatric First Aid Certificate courses are also offered to students taking this award. Students who gain a B grade or above will be considered for progression to the Level 3 Diploma or other AS/ Level 3 qualifications.

Subject modules and assessment
The Full Level 2 Diploma carries the equivalent academic value to 5 GCSE's. Each stage, Award, Certificate and Diploma will be awarded grades A* to D.
All students will be registered for the Full Diploma but achievement at Award and Certificate level are essential to continue to the next stage.
AWARD
Unit 1 - An Introduction to Working with Children. This is an introductory unit to give you an overview of the types of settings and local provision for children in your area. It will help you prepare for working in a setting and the responsibilities of your role.
Unit 2 - The Developing Child. Patterns of development & the factors that affect development. You will be introduced to ways of observing children, activities and care routines to enable you to support development.
ASSESSMENT - a written coursework assignment for each unit..
CERTIFICATE
Unit 3 - Safe, Healthy and Nurturing Environments for Children. This unit teaches you about the preparation and maintenance of a safe environment and how to safeguard children and adults through safe working practices. Also included is your role in managing conflict when working with children.
Unit 4 - Children and Play
You will learn about the importance of play in children's development, the stages and types of play and how you can provide appropriate activities to support development through play. This will include how to plan for challenge and risk in a safe environment.
Unit 5 - Communication and Professional Skills
During this unit you will learn how to develop effective communication skills to assist you in your work with children and adults in a variety of settings. You will also investigate employment opportunities and set targets for your own professional development .
SSESSMENT - a written coursework assignment for each units 4 & 5 and a multiple choice question paper.
DIPLOMA
Unit 6 - The Practitioner In The Workplace. This unit will run throughout the course and has a strong practical focus involving you in participating in a working environment with children. You will learn about the professional standards of a practitioner and how to apply them. You will also observe children and plan activities for them.
Optional Unit - Unit 8 -Play Activities for Children from Birth to 16yrs.
This unit will teach you about how to provide play activities for children and the diverse play needs of individuals.
ASSESSMENT - a written coursework assignment for the optional unit and a portfolio of practical evidence record, diary and professional development profiles for unit 6.
