Certificate in Comprehensive Oral Implantology

A unique course, conducted by the only university professor with more than 35 years of clinical experience and 22 years of uninterrupted academic teaching of oral rehabilitation using dental implants, reconstructive surgery and implant prosthetics.
The one-year course includes didactic and practical sessions on basic and clinical sciences with a significant number of hours dedicated to live surgeries and prosthetic rehabilitations, beyond the GDC requirements for training standards in implant dentistry.
The distinct characteristic of this exceptional programme can be summarized in two components:

Component two
Student executing surgical and prosthetic phases of patient care under mentoring and supervision.
Course Programme
Module One
Principles, basic and clinical sciences of implantology (part 1)
• Asepsis and sterilisation.
• Volumetric Classification of Available Bone for implant surgery.
Principles, basic and clinical sciences of implantology (part 2)
• Patient selection: clinical examination, tests, diagnostic criteria. Treatment planning: comprehensive patient carefrom first consultation to final restoration and follow up.
Hands on training: Asepsis. Clinical cases. Surgical techniques
• Hands on implant placement: Incision, osteotomy, implant insertion, management of soft tissue, closure.
• Hands on asepsis: gowning and patient preparation.
• Clinical cases: How to plan and prepare a treatment. • Literature review.
Module Two
Healing mechanisms of soft and hard tissues. Patient screening
• Bone: Overview of basic principles of physiology and metabolism, bone modelling and remodelling.
• Periosteum: Overview of basic principles of periosteal histophysiology, functions, damage and management.
• Healing: Healing mechanisms of muco-osteo-periosteum, hard and soft tissue necrosis.
• Patient screening: Medical evaluation of patients. Absolute and relative contra-indications, prescription.
Clinical and serial anatomy of head and neck
• Practical and critical anatomic landmarks necessary for the success of implant and reconstructive surgery.

Module Three (Oxford)
Contemporary medical imaging in implant and reconstructive surgery Radiography (periapical, panoramic, tomography) CT-scan, MRI, Bone Densitometry.
Hands on: Analysis and interpretation of radiographs and CT scans, measurement of bone volume.
Live surgery. Briefing and de-briefing of surgeries
Biomaterials and biocompatibility in implant and reconstructive surgery
• Panorama of natural and synthetic, metals and metal alloys, organic and inorganic materials. Heterogeneousand autogenous graft materials. Biological interfaces. Precise and successful indications.
• Literature review.
Module Four (Oxford)
Overview of graft procedures and guided tissue regeneration techniques
• Repair of limited volume bone defects, segmental bone defects, major bone defects.
• Principles of tissue proliferation, classification of membranes, surgical procedures, precautions, advantages,
disadvantages, major pitfalls, statistics. • Literature review.
Live surgery. Briefing and de-briefing of surgeries
Immediate implantation. Anaesthesia in implant and reconstructive surgery
• Immediate implantation: Basic sciences, surgical techniques, indications and contraindications.
• Anaesthesia in implant and reconstructive surgery: Local and block anaesthesia, pharmacopoeia, IV sedationand general anaesthesia.
• Complications: bradycardia, vagal malaise and anaphylactic shock, serum substitute fluids and indications.
Module Five
Implant prosthetics and occlusion. Bone expansion-compaction technique
• Basic principles of occlusion, impression techniques and laboratory protocols.
• Natural abutments: Removable and fixed prostheses, biomechanics of prostheses, aesthetics.
• Implant abutments: Removable and fixed prostheses, selection of abutments, choice of trays, screw/cementretentions, biomechanics and aesthetics of implant supported prostheses, concept of immediate loading.
• Bone expansion technique in implant management of thin alveolar ridges: Cortical and cancellous bonedeformation factors. Indications and contra-indications.
• Literature review.
Live surgery. Briefing and de-briefing of surgeries. Hands on training•
Hands on implant prosthetics: Selection of impression copings, abutments and impression taking.
Management of complications. Advanced implant and reconstructive techniques
•Management of complications: Implant complications, abutment complications, prosthetics complications,
reconstructive surgery complications, tissue loss.
• Overview of maxillary sinus cavities: anatomy and histophysiology, surgical techniques, biomaterials used.
• Overview of advanced implant techniques: Ramus blades and frame, tripodal, transmandibular, zygomatic andpterygoid implants.
