Course programme

The Institute of Counselling was founded in 1985 as a Christian based, not for profit independent educational body. It is committed to promoting pastoral care throughout the services it provides.

The Aims of the Institute of Counselling are:

(a) to promote the training and development of counselling skills, (b) to provide opportunities for continuing professional development, (c) to produce and distribute counselling skills training resources and (d) to provide a counselling service for individuals needing counselling.

The Institute provides a wide range of counselling and related courses. Students enrol with assurance and confidence on our quality courses, which are fully backed by the experience and resources of the Institute of Counselling.

In its early years the Institute offered only courses in Clinical and Pastoral Counselling, within a pastoral context. Since 1985, over 18,000 students from the UK and overseas have enrolled on these courses.

In recent years, has also produced a selection of further courses which follow the clinical person-centred approach developed by Carl Rogers and others.

The Institute is committed to providing counselling skills training to all who will benefit from the courses. On this basis a non-discriminatory policy is operated with regard to students' background, culture, ethnic origin, gender, age or creed.

Online Certificate In Counselling

This online introduction to Counselling single module course leads to the award of the College's Certificate in counselling. It serves also as the foundation module of our Diploma courses. This means that students who initially want to undertake only this single module may afterwards build up their studies to the level of our Diploma courses; ie courses 1500, 2500 or 4000 (Dip Coun), without repetition.

The online course is designed to provide a comprehensive and practical understanding of basic counselling skills. It teaches the person-centred approach to counselling and offers the student a clinical and pastoral perspective on client care. The course uses Egan's 3 Stage Model to help identify counselling skills and qualities throughout the counselling process. These three stages are: Explore-Understand-Act.

To accompany and enhance the course we include 2 video CD-ROMs and 1 Audio CD-ROM. These ensure that as you begin your study of counselling you will gain a unique insight into how professional counsellors use the same skills and techniques while you listen and watch actual counselling sessions.

The ten lessons include illustrations and short practical exercises which will help you to become familiar with your newly learned skills. Five of the ten lessons conclude with a case study assignment that you will complete online using or elearning system. Your responses to each assignment are individually assessed by your course tutor who will also offer guidance and feedback. For further details of the course contents please see the Certificate in Counselling module outline.

The online course is designed for six months part time study, although students may spread their studies over a full year if they wish.
