Is this course for me?
This is an ideal qualification for those already working in an environment where interpersonal skills are needed or those who wish to develop or consolidate their skills and knowledge.
You should have an introductory level counselling qualification or at least 30 hours of practical experience in a related field.
A reference testifying to the applicants suitability will also be required along with an interview.
You should have a reasonable level of literacy and numeracy. A work placement in either an employed or voluntary capacity is desirable but not essential.
How will I study?
Through discussions, group exercises, case studies, a short presentation and skills practice using role-playing to develop the practical application of the skills used in counselling.
There will be additional individual tutorial time available, which will be arranged with the tutor beforehand. You will also need additional private study time for further research, reading and producing your portfolio.
How will my progress be measured?
You will produce a portfolio of evidence relating to the course work, an ongoing personal reflective journal, a records of your skills practice and a personal action plan. Your portfolio will be internally assessed and externally moderated. You will also need to complete an externally assessed short answer paper.
Progression
The learner may be able to move forward in their training to a relevant Level 3 course in Counselling or related qualification. Level 2 will not allow a learner to gain employment in a counselling related role, but it will enhance employment prospects where people skills are required. The college offers progression routes through to Foundation Degree level.
