There are 12 units of study

Health

You will use the present perfect to talk about events starting in the past and continuing up to the present. You will practice using for and since to describe symptoms of illness. Skills in this lesson include identifying parts of the body, communicating symptoms to a doctor, and talking about health habits. You will also work on interpreting nutrition and fitness information.

Getting Hired

You will learn which verbs are followed by an infinitive and which take a gerund. You’ll also practice working with gerunds and nouns that follow prepositions and working with would rather to express preferences. You will look at job advertisements and learn to pick out the skills required for each. You’ll also fill out a job application and learn about how to prepare for a job interview.

On the Job

You will learn the difference between possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns and where to use each one. You will practice using could and might to express future possibilities. You will also learn how to compare employee behavior and attitudes. Other skills include learning to interpret a pay stub and benefit information and learning to identify safe workplace behavior. Near the end of the lesson, you will learn how to make polite requests and how to respond to criticism and compliments.

Citizens and Community

In this lesson, you will practice comparing and contrasting ideas using the words both, and, neither, not, but, and however. You’ll also practice using should to make a strong suggestion. Finally, you’ll learn to use the past tense and the modal would in contrary-to-fact statements, such as If I had more money, I would buy a car. Skills include identifying U.S. geographical locations, understanding the U.S. system of government, expressing opinions, and writing a speech.

Balancing Your Life

You will practice the used to form in statements and questions about past habits or states that have changed. You’ll also work with adjective clauses starting with where, who, and which. You’ll create your own goal chart, identify obstacles in your life, and think of solutions. You’ll also write about an important person and work on time-management skills.

Review of Lessons 1–5

This lesson reviews the material covered in Lessons 1–5. It covers these topics: health, getting hired, on the job, citizens and community, and balancing your life. The grammar points introduced and practiced in Lessons 1–5 are also covered.

Personal Finance

In this lesson, you will review contrary-to-fact conditional statements introduced in Lesson 4 and begin to work with contrary-to-fact questions. You’ll also practice making statements using the passive voice to emphasize an object or action when the doer is not important. Skills include calculating monthly expenses, identifying ways to save money, interpreting credit card and loan information, analyzing advertising techniques, and writing a business letter.

Buying a Home

This lesson introduces comparative and superlative adjectives. It also reviews yes/no questions and answers and several types of information questions. You’ll practice interpreting housing ads, comparing types of housing, and identifying housing preferences. You’ll go through the steps of purchasing a home. You’ll also take a look at mortgage information.

Community

Lesson 9 introduces embedded questions. Skills include locating community resources, using the telephone, and giving and responding to suggestions. You’ll also work on reading a road map and discovering places to volunteer in your community.

Intoduction to medical terms

This lesson introduces the present perfect continuous, which is used to accurately describe time and duration. You’ll also practice the use of the time expressions since and for. You’ll identify indirect and direct speech and practice reporting what other people said. You’ll describe symptoms and interpret doctor’s diagnoses and nutrition information. You’ll also be introduced to several medical terms, the differences in insurance plans, and health insurance applications.

Getting Hired

There are no grammar elements in this lesson. This lesson focuses on helping you identify skills and characteristics you need to get a good job. You’ll also get tips on how to conduct a job search, how to write a resume, how to write a cover letter, and how to prepare for a job interview.

Review of Lessons 7–11

This lesson reviews the material discussed in Lessons 7–11. It covers these topics: personal finance, buying a home, community, health, and getting hired. You’ll also review the grammar points introduced and practiced in Lessons 7–11.
