The CEIS has been carefully designed to consider the student's skills and knowledge development prior to entry. The programme content is thus arranged in a progressive way to support the student's further development while on the programme. There are three types of modules on the CEIS:EFS ModulesEnglish for Study (EFS) modules - Students study a combination of general English and academic English, where the four English skills of writing, reading, speaking and listening are developed through the English for Study (EFS) modules.Functional English ModulesStudents are introduced to language that is presented in context and the productive skills, speaking and writing, are encouraged for the purpose of achieving real communication outcomes. Consequently, it is a broad aim of these modules for students to learn, consolidate and become more fluent in using and understanding functional language. These language tasks are student-centred and typically focus on topics of international interest, vocabulary used in common everyday situations, and authentic materials. CLIL ModulesContent and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) modules - CLIL is neither just subject nor just language learning, but a merger of both whereby the student's knowledge is strengthened around all the various aspects of the language and subject. This integration of content, learning, communication and culture into the whole learning and teaching process promotes authenticity and relevance for the students, thus providing a firm foundation for further study and personal development. In addition to this, the programmes' two entry points (at the beginning of each semester) enable students who have a higher level of content and language ability to enter at the appropriate point on the programme. This is especially helpful for international institutions who typically want a programme that offers this type of flexibility for students at different levels . Thus the CEIS offers the possibility of a one year...

About this course

The CEIS programme enables international students to make the transition from their previous learning and teaching styles in their own culture to the styles of the more autonomous learning environment of the UK Higher Education system. This is undertaken in a highly supportive environment enabling students to engage appropriately as they progress. The programme employs a variety of teaching and learning strategies, with a focus on developing a range of knowledge and skills, providing students with the ability to apply them to selected areas of study. As well as the development of English language skills, students begin to develop additional study and research skills. All modules develop an independent learning culture, and provide a challenging learning experience. Students reflect on their knowledge and skills, particularly through a process of peer interaction, which includes class discussion, debate and group work. This sharing of experience encourages students to modify and develop their own, and their peers', academic and subject-specific knowledge and practices. The CEIS reflects excellence in teaching and learning and provides learning experiences which will enable students from a wide range of backgrounds to achieve their full learning potential. The teaching team have an established track record of teaching excellence, which is reflected in very high levels of student retention and satisfaction, as reported in student feedback. The teaching approach is based upon the University's established values of intellectual freedom, social justice, diversity, spirituality and creativity. Individuals matter and we adopt a caring, supporting but challenging approach. Students at Winchester experience the benefits of a University education on ahuman scale . Programme Leader Mandy JonesTeaching team Marija Davis Howard Giles Peter Boniface Kishanthi...
