About this course

To be eligible for this course applicants should have two GCSE's at Grades E or above in English and Maths and a letter of recommendation from school or previous employer covering attendance and behaviour.

Is the Course for Me?
The course is ideal for learners who are looking to join one of the uniformed services.

Applicants must be prepared to undergo a period of intense physical training, as a significant proportion of the course is dedicated to preparing learners for careers in the services where fitness is an essential requirement. It is worth noting that learners with long term medical injuries or on long term medication may not be able to complete the course. If you feel this could apply to you, please discuss at interview. Opportunities also exist for learners to complete other qualifications, including:

What will I Learn?
As part of this course learners will study the following topics:
  • Plan and Prepare Activities
  • Learn to Navigate
  • Team Skills
  • Self Discipline
  • Dealing with Emergencies
  • To Improve Fitness Levels

How will I Learn?
You will learn through a mix of practical and theoretical work, with an emphasis on team work and physical fitness. Much of your time will be spent involved in teamworking activities and fitness, based in and around the College facilities. Classes will be a balanced mix of 40% classroom work and 60% practical work.

How will I be assessed?
Your progress will be continually assessed through practical and assignment based activities and completion of a course portfolio.

What enrichment is available?
You will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden your experience of College life.

Are There any Trips and Visits?
Yes! Trips to the services including residential weeks and visits from the services. There is also a residential trip to a PGL adventure-training centre (cost approx £170), where you can experience kayaking, abseiling, raft building, high ropes and much more.

Is There any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a compulsory element of this course.

What Can I Progress too?
Upon completion learners will generally apply into one of the uniformed services. Previous learners are now working in the Army, Navy, RAF, Police and Fire Service.

Opportunities to progress to Level 1 Sports or advance to Level 2 Public Services/NVQ 2 Sport will also be available to successful learners.

Other Learners Experiences:
Previous learners have gone on to carry out investigative work opportunities within the services, undertake the military swim test and many learners have now entered into the uniformed services.

Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure.
