This 3 day workshop takes a detailed look at the common health conditions.

Course content:

Understand the function and structure of the current health care systems in the UK.

Understand the exercise referral process, your scope of practice, be able to determine ‘inappropriate referrals’, write referral letters and know your legal and ethical obligation when working with referral cases.

Discuss how to manage a successful referral scheme.

Evaluate the role of exercise in quality of life/mental health, disease risk reduction and condition management.

Know the recommendations for health-related physical activity in adults and the absolute contraindications to exercise.

Review the circulatory system, musculo-skeletal system, joints and supporting ligaments, posture, core training, spinal stabilisation, stretching and injury potential in relation to exercise referral.

Apply consulting skills, motivational interviewing and analyse physical activity patterns.

Review a range of theories on behavioural change, describe barriers to exercise and ways to overcome them, the dietary and nutritional guidelines for a range of clinical conditions.

Understand the causes and presentations, long term health risks and medications for a range of medical conditions, to include:

  • Cardiovascular hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia.
  • Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and joint replacement.
  • Diabetes (Type I and Type 2).
  • Obesity.
  • Simple mechanical back pain.
  • Depression, stress and anxiety.


Look at the desired effects and potential side effects for a range of common medications prescribed for hypertension/ PAD/ development of CHD / stroke / osteoporosis / arthritis and joint replacement / asthma and chronic lung disease / Parkinson’s Disease / MS / depression and anxiety.

Understand how coexisting health conditions and co-morbidities impact on the client and exercise programme design.

Prescribe safe and effective exercise for a range of medical conditions after selecting suitable physiological tests and be able to monitor and evaluate progress.

Know how to respond safely and appropriately to emergencies.
