Course programme
Mode of study: Fridays, part time.
Point of entry: September.
Attendance: 1 day a week for 37 weeks.
Course description: certificated professional course for TCM practitioners, giving an in-depth understanding of pre-prepared herbs (patents).
Subjects Studied
Herbal Formulas and Strategies: This module introduces the study of individual herbs and formulas (including pre-prepared ‘patent’ medicines) across Oriental medical theory, and their application in specific disease conditions. The practical application of the theoretical aspects is explored through exposure to clinical practice.
Herbal Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy: This module introduces a range of key macro- and micro-nutrients and the processes of catabolism, as well as the relationship between diet and disease and the giving of dietary advice. It also introduces the structure, properties and functions of the main classes of secondary plant chemicals and their actions on the human body. Using the College Herbal Dispensary and the Bristol Herb Garden, this module also explores pharmacognosy and dispensing issues in clinical practice.
All classes run for a full day from 9.30am to 5pm with lunch and tea breaks. The College is closed over the Christmas and Easter breaks. Timetables detailing exact dates of each class are usually available on enrolment but can also normally be given earlier on request. If your existing qualifications do not meet the entrance requirements for these courses you may be able to take the relevant units on a stand-alone basis at LCTA either prior to or concurrently with the course.
We also run regular study trips to China for final year students, graduates and practitioners to work in a Chinese TCM hospital in Hangzhou.
