Who is the programme for? The programme is aimed at Human Resource and Learning and Development practitioners. The programme provides an opportunity for practitioners to consolidate their experiences and to deveop their knowledge and competence in the field of Personnel and Development. Ultimately, the customers of the St Helens Diploma in Personnel and Development Programme cover the diverse spectrum of people who are career-minded individuals, self-employed, mature students and those starting out on their career.

What will I study? YEAR 1 - (Leadership and Management Field) covers the following 4 elements:- MANAGING FOR RESULTS - includes added-value contribution of management, workplace environment and customers, quality and continuous improvement and change management. MANAGING and LEADING PEOPLE - includes the fundamental characteristics of people, the changing world of work and optimising the people contribution in high performance working. MANAGING INFORMATION FOR COMPETATIVE ADVANTAGE - includes management information systems, and the management use of accounting and finance and statistics. MANAGING IN A STRATEGIC BUSINESS CONTEXT - includes strategic frameworks of organisations and business ethics, and economics, legal and political processes. YEAR 2 - (Specialist and Generalist Personnel and Development) - students will complete the following modules:- EMPLOYEE RELATIONS - is concerned with how to gain peoples commitment to the achievement of the organisations business goals and objectives in a number of different situations. PEOPLE RESOURCING - awareness of an organisations strategic direction and demonstrate that the resourcing policies, systems and procedures contribute to achieving the corporate strategic goals. PEOPLE MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT - This field is a compulsory core field of study for all candidates.) Aims to develop core knowledge and skills in each of the generic areas of personnel and development, resourcing, learning and development, relations and reward. YEAR 3 - (Specialist and Generalist Personnel and Development) - students will complete the LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT, - the organisational process of developing people involves the integration of learning and development processes, operations and relationships. Its most powerful outcomes for the business are to do with enhanced organisational effectiveness and sustainability. For the individual its about enhanced personal competence, adaptability and employability. L&D is therefore a critical business process. APPLIED PERSONNEL AND DEVELOPMENT - there are two aspects to this field - Management Research report - that demonstrates professional competence, and CPD learning log - provides evidence of systematic and continuous development. ELECTIVES - students elect to complete ONE of the following modules:- EMPLOYEE REWARD shows how people are rewarded in accordance with their value to an organisation. Its about both financial non-financial rewards and embraces the strategies, policies, structures and processes used to develop and maintain reward systems. OR EMPLOYMENT LAW - developing awareness regarding the volume of employment law that has increased rapidly due to national legislation, social dimension of European Union and case law, so that personnel professions will be a valuable resource to an organisation. In addition to attendance at lectures and skills workshops, you will need around 6 to 8 hours a week for private study to consolidate your learning and read more widely on the topic. This is considered a minimum requirement for this level of study.

Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? Our assessment methodologies are intended to be reliable, valid, objective and impartial and to this end students will be required to complete a 2,000 word assignment and a 3 hour unseen written examination for each of the fields. Also the successful completion of a 7,000 word management research report and CPD learning plan and record. St Helens College is an accredited centre facilitating internal and national examinations.

Future prospects? Successful completion of 4 fields of study leads to Graduateship membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. You can then progress to full Chartered Membership by submitting an upgrade portfolio as the College is an approved Licensed Upgrade Centre.

When will the programme start? The programme will start week commencing 7th September and 14th September 2009.

How long will it take? The main taught element comprises 3 hours attendance on:- YEAR 1 Tuesday afternoon (1.30pm 5.30pm) or Wednesday morning (9.30am 1.30pm) YEAR 2 Tuesday morning (9.30am - 1.30pm) or Thursday afternoon (1.30pm - 5.30pm) YEAR 3 Monday afternoon (1.30pm - 5.30pm) or Thursday morning (9.30am 1.30pm) The venue will be: - St Helens Business School at the Town Centre Campus St Helens. In addition, there will be skills development workshops (attendance is mandatory).

What about the Money? This is a full cost programme. The course fee for the academic year is 1,400 per year (subject to change, please check with Programme Leaders). Fee remission is not applicable.

Entry Requirements
This is a post-graduate level qualification, entry onto YEAR 1 candidate must provide evidence of academic development and/or experience at a strategic HR business level. An example of this may include the completion of the CIPD Certificate in Personnel Practice or Training Practice. Entry onto YEAR 2 is successful completion of YEAR 1. MBA students (within the last 10 years) and NVQ/SVQ level 5 in Management. Undergraduate qualifications (HND/HNC and NVQ/SVQ level 4 in Management will not be considered for exemption from YEAR 1.
