Course programme

Programme objectives
Key objectives and learning outcomes of the programme are detailed in the programme delivery and assessment section below.

Underpinning knowledge and understanding is provided through workshops and through guided study. Interactive exercises and group projects provide an opportunity to put these skills into practice as do work-related activities and assignments.

A range of interpersonal and study skills related to the Key Skills areas of Communication, Working with Others and Improving Own Learning is also covered within the programme.

Knowledge and understanding is also assessed through written assignments, while the ability to put theory into practice is assessed through oral presentations with at least one observation at the workplace.

Delivery personnel
BCTS use highly qualified practitioners and specialist guest speakers to deliver this CMI programme.

Programme delivery and assessment

1. Delivery of the programme and learning methods
The programme covers a 26-week period and consists of workshops and guided learning at the BCTS training centre in Norwich, and includes personal study and work-based assignments and projects. All candidates will be expected to complete within this 26 week timescale although individual needs and requirements will be taken into consideration.

Workshops
There are at least two workshop sessions per module plus extra sessions to cover generic aspects of the course such as effective communication, writing reports and assignments, designing projects and presentation skills. Workshops are held once a week and are designed to provide an outline of theory and understanding. They also include an interactive exercise or group project relating to the topic area.

Individual and guided study
Each learner is allocated a personal assessor and a mentor who will be available for guidance in-house and over the telephone. Learners are expected to consolidate their knowledge of theory through personal study and six hours of guided study per week is included in the programme. Guided learning time is included in the workshop day each week and assessors/mentors will be available to carry out assessments, review progress and to offer guidance on personal study.

Work-based assignments
As part of the guided learning, the programme contains assignments which have to be carried out at work. These offer an opportunity for the learner to consolidate knowledge and understanding in real practice.

Resources
In addition to assessor and mentor support, IT and paper-based resources are available at the centre. As members of the Institute students will also have the facility to access the Chartered Management Institute's full-text databases on MICWeb.

2. Assessment

a. Assessment mode
The programme is assessed by written assignments and oral presentations. The CMI criteria, which are applied to all of the internal assessments are as follows:

The candidate must display knowledge, which is current and accurate and relevant in depth and breadth. The candidate's understanding shows a clear grasp of concepts and an ability to link theory to practice. The candidate's skills show the ability to communicate clearly in the relevant discipline at the expected level for the qualification

b. Written work
There are seven written assignments, one for each module, of approximately 1,500-2,000 words. Assignments are designed to give the learner an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of theory by relating it to practice and are focused on real work tasks, situations and procedures.

All written assignments should be word-processed in double line spacing. Guidance will be given on format.

c. Oral presentation
Students are assessed on one oral presentation of five minutes duration, in which presentation skills, as well as content will be taken into consideration.

d. Marking criteria
Written work and your project will be assessed on the basis of knowledge and understanding and the ability to relate theory to practice; structure, content and expression in writing; and your ability to critically evaluate and analyse. Work will be given either a "pass" or "fail" result.

e. External Assessment
For the Certificate in Management there is one component of external assessment. This is for Unit S7 Developing People and Planning Work and consists of a written assignment that is externally marked by the CMI. This is an open book assignment rather than a test format. Candidates will have 4 weeks in which to complete the assignment. Feedback will be given to candidates who are unsuccessful and such candidates may retake the external assignment up to a maximum of three times during their period of registration as Institute students.

BCTS also offer NVQ 2 and 3 in Management.

Skills for Life support is available on all BCTS training programmes.
BCTS mentor support is available for most categories of learners.
