Course Content: (Year 1) Atoms, Bonds and Groups: This unit covers basic ideas about bonding and develops an understanding of the periodic table. Chains, Energy and Resources: The chemistry of carbon compounds. Ideas about equilibria and rates of reaction are introduced. This module also explores the ways in which chemistry can help minimise environmental pollution & maximise our use of resources. Practical skills: Set experimental tasks are carried out during the year and certain practical skills assessed. Course Content: (Year 2) Rings, Polymers and Analysis: The role of organic chemistry in the modern world. Analytical techniques such as spectroscopy and chromatography are used. Equilibrium, Energetics and Elements: A further study of rates of reaction, equilibrium and energy changes. An introduction to the chemistry of the transition elements. Practical Skills: Set experimental tasks are carried out during the year and certain practical skills assessed.
