Standard AS/A level entry requirements of five GCSEs at grade A*-C apply.
In addition a minimum grade of BB in Science or B in Chemistry is required.
Plus a minimum APS Score: 47

Chemistry - AS/A2 Level

Aim This course builds on knowledge gained at GCSE and develops new skills for anyone who has a particular interest in chemistry. There is the opportunity to carry out a wide range of practical techniques which are valued by employers in related industries. At the end of the course, you will be qualified to enter a career in a science laboratory, or study for a degree at university.
Content During the course you will:
· Improve your understanding of chemical topics
· Develop your skills in laboratory procedures and techniques
· Show the connection between chemistry and industry and its importance to society
· Develop your ability to solve problems and analyse data and draw conclusions. Be aware that there are lots of calculations on this course.

Year 1 - AS level
1. Atomic structure, bonding, formulae and introduction to organic chemistry.
2. Molecules and forces, introduction to inorganic chemistry, organic and environmental chemistry.
3. Chemistry laboratory skills
I. A number of your practicals will be assessed during the year.

Year 2 - A level
4. Rates, equilibria and further organic chemistry.
5. Transition metals and nitrogen chemistry.
6. Chemistry laboratory skills
II. A number of your practicals will be assessed during the year.
You will take a written exam for all 6 units.

Progression/career opportunities The successful completion of this course will allow students to progress on to a range of related Higher Education programmes, or into a career in a science laboratory.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
