Chemistry is the study of all chemical compositions and processes, in order to better understand the way in which materials are structured and how they react in certain situations.

By studying Chemistry at A level, you'll explore atomic structure, thermodynamics and periodicity whilst conducting practical experiments in the laboratory such as inorganic tests and redox titrations.

Upon completing this A level, you'll have developed valuable laboratory skills and chemical techniques in preparation for university and your future career.

Course programme

Throughout this A level, you will cover the following units:
  • Physical: atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, electrochemical, thermodynamics, acids and basis.
  • Inorganic: periodicity, group 2 metals, and the halogens, period 3 and their oxides, transition metals and reactions of ions.
  • Organic: alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and organic analysis, optical isomerism, aldehydes and ketones, aromatic chemistry and organic synthesis

In addition to the theoretical aspects of the course, you will also be assessed on your practical ability in the laboratory. An example of some of the experimental techniques you will be expected to undertake include:
  • Redox titrations
  • Determining an equilibrium constant
  • Purifying and organic solid
  • Inorganic tests
