Course programme

This is a three module course that assumes no knowledge of the subject to start with and progressively takes you through appropriate GCSE and ‘A’ level concepts necessary for joining a health science degree course.

The chemistry course is available for home study and/or attendance. The six day taught course is delivered over three weekends, twice a year. You will automatically receive an audio-visual recording of the taught lectures with home-study course materials. However, some students benefit from attending the chemistry classes, particularly if this is a new subject or studied many years ago.

Most of our students joining the undergraduate degree courses need to complete the chemistry foundation course. Chemistry underpins biochemistry and nutritional science and therapy. Understanding the fundamentals of chemistry provides a strong basis for joining the degree course.

You will learn about the atom, the period table of elements, how compounds are formed, molecular mass, electrolysis, acids, alkalis and pH in module one. During module two you will study reactivity and reactions, advanced concepts relating to the electronic structure of atoms and will be introduced to organic chemistry. Module 3 will further your understanding of organic chemistry, natural organic materials, enzymes, electrolytes and buffers, movement across membranes and free radicals.

Whether you are studying the course completely from home or attending the lecture days, the Chemistry Foundation tutors will be there to support you throughout the course. You will receive the recommended course textbook as part of the materials, the course workbook, CD-ROM for each module, CD-ROM for the taught chemistry classes and contact details for the course tutor/s and mentor. Each workbook contains relevant textbook references and written short questions, which you submit to your tutor at the end of each module. The course mentor will contact you regularly to see how you are progressing with the course.
You should allow approximately 70 hours to complete module 1, 30 hours to complete module 2 and 20 hours to complete module 3. If you attend classes or have some prior knowledge of chemistry you are likely to progress through the course faster. We recommend that you spend two to three months completing the course, which would take about 8-10 hours a week.

Module 1

  • Introduction
  • Atomic Theory – inside the atom
  • Periodic Table of Elements
  • Bonding – how compounds are formed
  • Molecular Mass and Moles
  • Electrolysis
  • Acids, Alkalis and pH

Module 2

  • Reactivity and Reactions
  • Electronic Structure of Atoms – Advanced Concepts
  • Focus on the p-block elements
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Reactions in Organic chemistry – how covalent bonds are broken

Module 3

  • Further Reactions in Organic Chemistry
  • Natural Organic Materials
  • Enzymes
  • Electrolytes and Buffers
  • Movement across Membranes
  • Free Radicals

Home Study

On receipt of application form and payment, you will be sent the following:
The recommended course text book
The course workbook for the module CD-ROM for each Module Contact details for the course tutor

Each course workbook includes:

  • relevant text book page numbers
  • written short questions which are submitted to the tutor at the end of each module

Tutor support is available throughout the course and assessments will be returned with marks and comments.

You can submit your work unit by unit for feedback and assessment or you can send in a completed module.

We recommend that you submit your work on a regular basis rather than complete the whole course before receiving feedback

As well as the Academic Course Tutor a Personal Mentor is also assigned to you who will keep in regular contact with you.

Time Commitment

The Chemistry Foundation Course is expected to require approximately 110 hours to complete in total. (The first module takes the longest). This includes reading and assignment time.

Additional information

Payment options: The cost of each module is £205 inc. VAT and includes the cost of all materials and postage and packaging within the UK; overseas students will incur extra postage costs. The fee for each module is payable in advance; each module may be paid for separately. If all three modules are required, a 10% discount will be available to students who pay the full amount for 3 modules in advance. The cost of each module as a refresher course is £75 inclusive of VAT. The course material will also be available on-line in due course at this website but the course textbook will need to be posted and costs £13.99 to buy plus P&P.
