About this course

You will need at least GCSE grade C Maths. You should preferably also have GCSE grade BB Double Science or grade C Chemistry, but grade CC Double Science will be considered on an individual basis.

Chemistry, AS-level
About the Course
The Topics in each unit have two components:
1 A storyline that provides the context within which chemical ideas and skills are developed. Each storyline is self-contained and written to be worth studying in its own right.
2 Activities that include laboratory-based practical work as well as group exercises, data analysis, application of IT etc. These activities can provide evidence of your skills. The course will include a visit to a local business in the chemical industry.
AS Level
Unit 1: Chemistry for Life (30%).
Topics: Elements of Life; Developing Fuels.
Unit 2: Chemistry of Natural Resources(50%).
Topics: Elements from the Sea; The Atmosphere; and The Polymer Revolution. Coursework consists of Chemistry in Practice (20%) and will be assessed in a series of practical excercises.
A2 Level
Unit 3: Chemistry in Materials (30%).
Topics: The Thread of Life; The Materials Revolution; What†s in a Medicine; and The Steel Story.
Unit 4: Chemistry by Design (50%).
Topics: Agriculture and Industry; Colour by Design; The Oceans; and Medicine by DesignIndividual Investigation (20%). This is a four-week investigation where you can study in more detail any area of the course that interests you. It should involve carrying out your own experiments and the work you do may assist you in your quest for a university place.

How is the course assessed?
AS consists of written examinations in the first two Modules (80%) and Chemistry in Practice (20%). A2 consists of written examinations in Modules 3 and 4 (80%) and an individual investigation (20%).
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .

Essential if you intend to study Medicine, Chemistry AS and A2 will support any other science-based course and lead to scientific/industrial career paths.
