About this course
This course covers all the material for Chief Mate/Master written examinations (previously Class 2/1). It is your responsibility to ensure that all the entry requirements for the course and entry to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) examinations are met prior to attending the course. These requirements are: No less than 18 months sea service as a watchkeeping officer whilst holding a Certificate of Competency (COC) not lower than Class 4 (STCW95 Officer of the Watch) Discharge book entries verifying sea service Watchkeeping certificates to support all watchkeeping sea service To support your application to the MCA for a Chief Mate COC you will have to submit the following: The previous (lower) COC Discharge book and watchkeeping certificates HND unit grades, issued by the college SQA results MCA oral examination result â€" entered on â€-Notice of Eligibility†by examiner Signals certificate â€" issued by college Navigation, Radar & ARPA Simulator Training (Management) certificate â€" issued by college Medical Care Aboard Ship â€" issued by college GMDSS certificate â€" issued by the examining centre. This must be a centre approved by the MCA Medical Fitness Certificate (ENG1 or equivalent) Two Photographs

Course content:
The Edexcel Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nautical Science is a 32 week course covering:
- Marine Operations
- Shipboard Operations
- Ship Stability
- Navigation
- Meteorology
- Engineering & Control
- Management & Law
All sections will be assessed by the College. Depending upon which units are achieved a full HND or a Certificate of Achievement is awarded. Both cover the required content of the Chief Mate course. Governing boards:
- Navigation, Radar & ARPA Simulator Training -"Management (NRA Man) is integrated within the main course but a separate certificate is issued.
- MCA written examinations are administered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) there are examinations in Ship Stability and in Navigation.
The course is designed so that these examinations are taken during the second term. For the MCA Oral examination tuition for this willbe given in the third term and there is a concentrated orals preparation period during weeks 33 to 36. Signals tuition is given and provision made for candidates to sit the MCA signals examination at the College. Medical Care Aboard Ship tuition and exam will be arranged during 1st Term.

Progression opportunities:
Further sea service candidates are eligible to enter the oral examination for the Masters COC. Candidates are required to have a minimum of 36 months sea service as Officer of the Watch (OOW) whilst holding a Class 4 COC (or equivalent). A minimum of 18 months of this sea service must be whilst holding a Chief Mate COC (or equivalent).
