This course has been oversubscribed in recent years and as a result a formal interview is required to ascertain suitability for this course. You will need to show: awareness of the need for a caring and empathetic manner (e.g. voluntary work, mentoring, play schemes, after school clubs; good communication skills (oral and written); the ability to show initiative and work independently (e.g. producing portfolios); evidence that you have researched the range of career options and evidence of excellent attendance.
Unit 1: An introduction to working with children (multiple choice question paper)
Unit 2: Development from conception to age 16 years (Portfolio)
Unit 3 : Supporting children (Portfolio)
Unit 4: Keeping children safe (Portfolio)
Unit 5: The principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children (Portfolio)
Unit 6: Promoting a healthy environment for children (Portfolio)
Unit 7: Play and learning in children's education (Portfolio)
Unit 8: Caring for children (Portfolio)
Unit 9: Development of professional skills within children's education (Practice evidence records).You must achieve all nine units, plus three optional units (i.e. three units to be chosen from units 10 - 2)

Associated Costs
A CRB check is a compulsory element to this course. Students are expected to pay the full cost (approximately £36) and additional costs may be incurred if sufficient evidence cannot be provided (passport, driving licence etc)Academic standards are assessed both internally and externally by assignments, a research task and external tasks.Throughout the two years of study, students will undertake practical training in a variety of settings in order to apply what you learn in a practical environment.The Diploma will be awarded UCAS tariff points, which allows for progression.This qualification prepares students to work unsupervised with children and their families in a variety of settings and also, environments within the sector of Childrens Services. Students can also progress to Higher Level qualifications, for example, nursing or teaching. This will be subject to the individual requirements of the university or Higher Education college.
