Childhood experiences shape the rest of our lives and being part of that journey is rewarding, challenging and often surprising. We have designed our top-up course in Childhood Studies to provide detailed knowledge for a variety of future careers working with children.

Our course give you the academic knowledge to succeed in this constantly-changing field as well as an in-depth understanding of children’s social, physical, emotional and intellectual needs. You will study the contemporary environment surrounding those who work with children as well as exploring and implementing support strategies and improving your communication and management skills.

About this course

Academic: A relevant HND or a foundation degree in the areas of Early Years, or Advanced Practice with Children and Families, with 240 credits.

GCSE / IGCSE English language and maths grades A*-C or grade 9-4 or equivalent.

EU/international students

Academic: European and International qualifications studied in a relevant subject matter will also be considered applicants will need to have achieved 120 ECTS or equivalent (European Credit Transfer)

Research Option

Students will have the option of choosing one of the following research modules:
  • Professional Engagement
  • Research Project (SEHC)
Teaching & assessment

Teaching is carried out by appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers and in a typical teaching week you will have up to 12 contact hours made up as follows:
  • Larger group teaching - 6 hours of lectures
  • Small group teaching - students are timetabled for a 3 hour session per week
  • Tutorials – 3 hour is timetabled per week consisting of a mixture of personal, group and academic tutorials
Individual study

You will need to apportion approximately 20 hours per week outside of the timetabled hours. Some weeks the amount of time you need for personal study will increase, especially when completing assessments. UCB Online provides a 24 hour access to learning and support material.
