About this course

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, (one of which must be English and also preferably maths, or a First Diploma at a merit in a related subject. Candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course. We are interested in your enthusiasm and commitment to succeed.
A satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Check will be required prior to enrolment.

Who The Course is for
Those who wish to gain a recognised qualification in Children's Care, Learning and Development.
To work in a childcare setting, you should be:
- caring and have a responsible approach
- good with children
- patient, calm and efficient
- energetic and creative
- genuinely interested in children.

Course Content
Students will study 7 compulsory units:
- Positive Relationships for Children's Care Learning and Development
- Positive Environments for Children's care Learning and Development
- Promoting Children's Development
- Reflecting on and Developing Practice
- Protecting Children
- Promoting Children's Rights
- Children's Learning Activities and Play
PLUS 9 specialist units
Key skills in communication will also be studied as an integral part of the course.
800 hours of compulsory work experience is required to complete this qualification.

Entry RequirementsLearning & Assessment Methods
All units are assessed by internally set assignments. Unit 4 requires the successful completion of 800 hours work experience placement in addition to a portfolio of placement related evidence.

If you successfully complete a level 3 course at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College we will offer you a place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at Newcastle College (subject to satisfactory interview or course audition).

Career Opportunities
A BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care Learning and Development - Level 3 is equivalent to three A Level passes at grades A to E. Students with a BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care Learning and Development Level 3 have access to a wide range of career opportunities including further training in areas such as Education, Social Work and Nursing; as well as employment as a nursery nurse.
