About this course

5 or more GCSEs at grade A-C (one of which must be English Language).The BTEC First Diploma CCLD or First Diploma in Health & Social Care (distinction grade) may also be considered. The most important requirement you need to meet for this course is that you enjoy working with and being with children and that you have had some experience of this type of work.

Aim This 2 year qualification prepares you to work unsupervised or in a supervisory capacity with children and their families in a variety of settings within the sector of children's services.

Content The course is made up of 7 core units and 11 optional units:
Unit 1 - Positive relationships for childrens†care, learning and development
Unit 2 - Positive environments for CCLD
Unit 3 - Promoting childrens†development
Unit 4 - Reflecting on and developing practice for children aged 0-8 years*
Unit 5 - Safeguarding children
Unit 6 - Promoting childrens†rights
Unit 7 - Childrens†learning activities and play.

* Unit 4 requires 800 hours of work experience to be completed.

Work placements will enable you to develop your professional skills. You will spend 2 days of your college week in practical work-training placements and additional block placement weeks in order to achieve the 800 hours .

You will be assessed throughout the course through written assignments, practical tasks, case studies and your performance on work placement.

Progression/career opportunities
This is a highly regarded and well-recognised professional qualification both in the UK and abroad. Successful students can choose a variety of careers in areas such as nurseries, primary schools, crèches, private homes, hospitals, play centres, holiday companies and the leisure industry.

This qualification can also be used towards entry into Higher Education as it is the equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Extra information All students will be required to successfully complete a CRB disclosure form. In order to attend work placements a clear CRB is required. The cost of this will be met by the student and is currently £37.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
