CIEH Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

This qualification sets the minimum standard for all those in or entering the teaching, learning and development sector. It is intended that by 2010 all existing trainers and teachers working in the publicly-funded sector will have to hold a recognized teaching qualification, which can either be a Certificate, Degree in Education or one of the new CIEH qualifications.Attending this course will help candidates to gain a threshold license to practice as a teacher.

Program

This course introduces the knowledge and skills required by teachers to develop and deliver programmes, provide learning support and take responsibility in managing the learning process in post-16 education. This includes adult and community learning and development, further education, libraries, archives and information services and work-based learning.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Roles, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
  • Appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a specialist area
  • Demonstration of session planning skills – plan, deliver, observe and evaluate a micro-teaching session
  • How to deliver inclusive sessions that motivate learners
  • The use of different assessment methods
  • The need for accurate record keeping and procedures that can be adopted – including internal and external assessment information.

It is designed to be delivered in 30 hours of teaching time, not including breaks, and revision and practice sessions, with an additional 30 hours for assimilation, consolidation and assignment planning, development and submission. There will be one practical assessment and two written assignments.
