This course was formerly known as CIPD – Personnel Practice.
The Certificate in HR Practice (CHRP) provides a firm foundation in all the areas of HR, as well as an understanding of HR in a business context. It will help students develop practical, relevant skills and above all, will give them the confidence to be more effective at work.

Course programme

1. Developing yourself as an effective HR or L&D practitioner Develop a sound understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviour required for a professional HR or L&D practitioner. Know how to deliver timely and effective HR services to meet user needs. To be able to reflect on own practice and development needs, and maintain a plan for personal development. 2. Understanding organisations and the role of HR An introduction to the role of HR operations in an organisation and environmental context. Develop an understanding of HR activities support and organisation’s strategy and assist the achievement of business objectives, and how these are shaped by internal and external factors. 3. Recording, analysing and using HR information Develop an understanding of the important contribution that accurate data (stored manually or electronically) can make to the HR function. Understanding the legal implications of storing personnel data. To be able to record data and information and to interpret, analyse and present information clearly and accurately in an appropriate format in support of decision making to meet organisation-wide objectives and support solutions. 4. Resourcing talent Develop and understanding of the factors that impact on an organisation’s resourcing and talent planning activities Understand the relationship between recruitment and selection by identifying the key stages in each separate but related process and the benefits to the organisation of attracting and retaining a diverse workforce will be emphasised. Be able to make a positive contribution to the recruitment and selection process by developing their knowledge. Be able to discuss key legislation pertaining to recruitment and selection. Learn about good practice in employee induction and retention and the importance of collaborative working with other stakeholders. 5. Supporting Good Practice in Managing Employment Relations An introduction to employment law within the context of employee relations. Understand the aspects of HR activity, looking at good practice and legal requirements within each activity. Provide learners with the basic knowledge of employment law. 6. Supporting Good Practice in Performance and Reward Management Provides an introduction to the purpose and processes of performance and reward management and the role of human resources (HR) in promoting and supporting good practice. Gain understanding of how motivational theories and associated tools can be used within the context of performance and reward management and how these can have a positive impact on an organisation’s business objectives. Gives an overview of appropriate skills and good practice associated with performance management reviews and follow-up and the data management aspects. Learn how to apply financial and non-financial benefits and important determinants of reward decisions. There are no “exams” as such. Assessment is through submission of reports, presentations and observation of students carrying out practical case situations, to a published time table, throughout the academic year. It helps if students are working in a HR environment and have access to organisational policies and practices. Those students not working in a HR environment may need to spend more time researching. This is a requirement of CIPD for acceptance on the course. Students need to join CIPD within 3 weeks of the start of the course and remain as members until the qualification is achieved. Payment is made directly to CIPD. CIPD are currently review membership fees and these are likely to go down for students. However at the moment student membership fee is currently as follows: One off admission fee of £40 plus a subscription fee of £157. Total £197. CIPD may charge a late joining fee of £100 to those who join part way through their participation on the course. CIPD offer a number of flexible ways to pay. The site provides extensive checklists on a range of HR issues and is widely used on the course.
