ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
4 GCSE Grade D or above.
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is for anyone with an interest in boats, yachts or the marine industry and want to look at a career in the most exciting and dynamic industry on the Island and in the South of England.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The course consists of four units; the college is offering two routes.
All students study the mandatory units
Developing self and working safely in a marine engineering environment
Marine Technology
Then choose either
Installation and fitting out of boats
Composites for marine construction
Or
Maintaining and servicing marine engines and power systems
Marine propulsion systems
Within this the student will learn about the industry as a whole and the various roles, jobs and career pathways through the industry. They will learn about the terminology and technology used in the industry, the tools and equipment used in the many sectors of the industry and the principles behind boat construction.
The course is a very practical one where the student will get hands on experience of fitting various parts and pieces of equipment to boat structures. They will also be manufacturing boat related composite components. These activities will be undertaken at our brand new Marine and Composites facility adjacent to the college.
In addition to this the student will study for a progression award adding another valuable set of skills and increasing the practical element of the course and the appropriate key skills.
HOW WILL I LEARN?
The course has two practical units and two theory based units, this gives a good spread of practical and classroom based work. The student will have access to all the latest teaching aids, computer based learning material and full computer access.
WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
The course naturally leads on to the Level 3 boat Construction qualification and can lead from that to more academic study at level 3 and on to Higher Education courses of study leading ultimately to Degree level.
