About this course

Candidates must possess relevant practical experience and a good working knowledge of BS7671. It is strongly recommended by City & Guilds however, that anyone considering this course has already taken the 2382 17th Edition and the 2391-10 Inspection & Testing courses.

Course programme

Design, Erection and Verification of Electrical Installations

This is a 4 day course - with a 5th day scheduled for exams.

The course is intended for personnel in electrical contracting companies who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation and inspection and testing processes. It addresses, in particular, the implications of the Wiring Regulations for Electrical Installations.

The full 2391-20 qualification is achieved following successful completion of all three of the following units;

1) Practical application of the inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations (practical exam)

2) Technical knowledge of design, erection and verification of electrical installations (written exam paper)

3) Design of electrical installations (project, minimum 20 hrs)

Course Content:

1) Practical Unit

The aim of this unit is to enable the candidate to develop the necessary technical practical skills about the inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations.

· Sequence and actual tests to be carried out as prescribed in BS7671 (Guidance Note 3)

· Proving test instruments

· Completion of periodic and minor works forms with associated schedules and results

2) Theory Unit

The aim of this unit is to enable the candidate to develop the necessary technical knowledge and understanding about the design, erection and verification of electrical installations.

· Design and verification of installations to comply with BS7671

· Fundamental design principles

· Characteristics of an installation that affect installation design

· Conducting initial verification in line with procedures and legislation.

· Requirements for selection and erection of wiring systems, protection, isolations, switching etc.

· Special installations and locations

· Conducting initial inspections in line with procedures and legislation

· Completion of periodic and minor works forms with associated schedules and results

3) Project Unit

The aim of this unit is to enable the candidate to obtain and demonstrate the necessary skills to design a small commercial / industrial or domestic installation.

This project is intended to cover a minimum of 20 hours work. The installation specification will include a site drawing showing, for example, the locations of major current using equipment, lighting and heating requirements and facilities for portable equipment. Information such as the characteristics of supply and the ratings of equipment will also be supplied. The specification will include at least one special installation or location as defined in Part 7 of BS7671.
