Assessment is informal and ongoing
Course content
The course has 4 units.
Unit 1 Design for craft introduces you to basic design elements. You will learn about colour, line, shape, form and texture. A folder of work will be produced and this will help you to design your craft items.
Unit 2 Sampling – Exploring potential of ideas and materials. In this unit the learner will explore the potential of ideas by using a range of materials to create a portfolio of experimental samples. This will include the development of ideas for the curtain and cushion units.
Unit 3 Making a pair of lined curtains. In this unit you will learn how to make curtains to a professional standard. The techniques of making various headings will be made as samples before you make the pair of lined curtains.
Unit 4 Make a square cushion with a zip opening with patchwork or appliqué as the decorative feature.
Use tools and equipment carefully and safely
Consider proportion, line, shape and texture when planning window treatments and cushions
Measure and estimate fabric for curtains and cushions.
Sample mitres and stitches used in curtain making.
Experiment with a variety of commercial tapes to produce samples of curtain headings
Learn how to make lined curtains
Pattern match fabric for curtains
Calculate fabric quantities for projects
Cut and stitch fabric accurately
How to sew triple and goblet pleat headings for curtains
Sample the techniques and processes needed to make the two craft units accurately.
Sample decorative techniques for cushions, including patchwork and appliqué
Additionality
All learners at West Herts College take part in an initial assessment in order for us to help them succeed on their chosen course.
All assessments are made full size and students will need to purchase materials according to projects undertaken.
Some basic items are available from college at a non-profit making cost.
Assessment
At the end of the course an external verifier who is a subject specialist will look at your work to ensure it is to the required standard by City and Guilds.
Progression
Advice and guidance will be given during the course on further progression opportunities.
