The College offers opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of Countryside Management encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mix of practicals, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises.

For learners with 4 GCSE’s including English Language at Grade C, the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma has 6 units (60 Credits) of study and makes up the first year of the Level 3 Diploma qualification, 12 units (120 Credits) for learners that wish to study for 1 or 2 years. Applicants with at least 5 GCSE’s at Grade C or above including English Language, Maths and Science or course specific (which could include Chemistry, Combined Science, Biology, Physics or PE etc) will be able to apply for the Level 3 Extended Diploma studied over 2 years requiring successful completion of 18 or more units (180 Credits).

The Countryside Management course comprises a core programme with optional routes in either habitat conservation or gamekeeping. By choosing appropriate modules the students will engage in an interesting study of either conservation or gamekeeping although the general theme of both options is habitat improvement and good management of the countryside.

The habitat conservation option provides students with plenty of opportunities to obtain the knowledge and 'hands on' experience needed for managing a range of habitats such as saltmarshes, woodlands, ponds, reedbeds and grassland. Students will also learn the necessary countryside skill to manage these habitats, for example dry-stone walling, All terrain vehicle driving, tractor driving, hedge laying, tree planting and fencing.

The gamekeeping option includes the general practical countryside skills integral to the Habitat route but also involves students directly in the organisation and running of the colleges own Game and wildfowl shoot on the extensive Myerscough Estate. It also includes Gundog training, rifle and shotgun shooting, and management of the Colleges own gamebird production facilities including the incubation and rearing of at least 1,000 birds annually.’

The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to enable them to proceed to higher education or employment as habitat managers, estate workers and local authority conservation officer wardens.
