Chainsaws are very versatile tools with a variety of uses but they are also potentially dangerous. Serious accidents can and do occur without proper training or because operators have not kept their skills up to date.
Training is a legal requirement! The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) requir employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that chainsaws and related equipment are operated only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use. Anyone working in or on trees is expected to hold a recognised certifiate of competance. As Askham Bryan College we offer a range of courses on the safe use of chainsaws to help candidates gain new skills and update existing ones.
The City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenence and Cross Cutting (previously called CS30) is designed for those with little or no experience of chainsaws who intend to use the chainsaw for business, domestic or leisure activities. It is suitable for those seeking contractual work in proffessional forestry, amenity or arboricultural activities which is likely, immediately or at some future date, to involve felling trees over 200mm diameter and aerial work.
This qualification is divided into 2 units which candidates must achieve to be awarded with this qualification:
1) Carry out maintenance of chainsaws and cutting systems
2) Cross-cut timber using a chainsaw

At Askham Bryan College we offer a range of courses on chainsaw operation to help you gain new skills and update existing ones. Chainsaws are very versatile tools with a variety of uses but they are also potentially dangerous. Serious accidents can and do occur without proper training or because operators have not kept their skills up to date. The forestry and arboricultural industries recognise that good health and safely practice is vital for operators and business. Gaining industry recognized qualifications ensures that operators have reached agreed standards of competence and the City & Guilds NPTC qualifications are ideally suited to the professional chainsaw user as the HSE recommend that the minimum level of adequate for chainsaw operators should be achieved by undertaking an independent assessment in the relevant activities.

Following the successful completion of this qualification candidates can progress on to further City & Guilds NPTC Chainsaw related qualifications as appropriate to their work.

Course Content

The qualification is divided into 2 units; candidates must achieve both to gain this qualification:

Carry out Maintenance of Chainsaw and Cutting System:

· Be able to work safely

· Be able to carry out maintenance of chainsaw and cutting system

· Be able to carry out operational chainsaw checks

· Know relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice

· Know how to carry out maintenance of chainsaw and cutting system

Cross-cut Timber using a Chainsaw

· Be able to work safely

· Be able to cross-cut timber suing a chainsaw

· Know relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice

· Know how to cross-cut timber using a chainsaw

Following their training candidates will undertake an independent assessment for this unit which will be a mixture of practical and verbal questioning.
