Is it for me?
Yes if you have enthusiasm and a genuine interest in the catering & hospitality industry and a passion for food. This course will provide a basis for a career in hospitality.

What do I need?
You must be able to work on your own and as part of a team and have a good work ethic, combined with excellent attendance and punctuality.
On this course you will be required to buy the following equipment:
  • Uniform
  • Coursebook & Knife kit

What will I study?
The course includes the following units:
  • Maintain a safe hygienic and secure working environment
  • Maintain food safety when storing, handling and serving food
  • Contribute to effective team work
  • Plus 4 other optional units

You will develop your skills within a real working environment provided via a superbly equipped training kitchen and on work placement, 1 day a week.
In addition you will be expected to work towards Level 2 Food Service qualification during your training.
Full time students will also study Functional Skills and Basic Food Hygiene.

Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.

How will I be assessed?
You will be continuously assessed in both practical and theory work throughout the course. You will build up a portfolio of work to support your learning. This will lead to the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 1 in Food Preparation and Cooking.

How will I be taught?
Practical sessions will take place in an up to the minute industry standard training and production kitchen, by highly skilled,highly qualified and experienced chef lecturers. Theory sessions are taught in outstanding theory classrooms.

What qualification will I get?
City & Guilds NVQ Level 1 Food Preparation and Cookery
Level 2 Food Service.

Can I go on to further study?
You could progress on to NVQ Level 2 Professional Cookery.
