Information about the course

This integrated programme gives a broad introduction to hairdressing and develops practical skills required by industry. Educational visits will include Salon International and college competitions. There will be work experience for one week and students are taught in working salons in college, which are open to the public.

Course content

NVQ Level 1 consists of six units.
This is a foundation course to prepare successful students for NVQ Level 2 hairdressing.
Units
Ensure own actions reduce risk to health and safety - G1
Assist with salon reception duties - G2
Contribute to the development of effective working relationships - G3
Shampoo and condition hair - H1
Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas - H5
Assist with hair colour services - H37

Additionality

All students will study towards Key Skills Certification.
Work experience will be undertaken.

Assessment

Continuous assessment in written and practical aspects of hairdressing
Additional evidence will be required through assignment work. Standards require students to work to a "commercially viable time" - at Level 1 this applies to shampooing & conditioning.

Progression

Further study NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing
Possible career path working as a junior in a salon.
