This course aims to introduce and explore the recent and ongoing changes in the architecture of aid. It will look at the history of development policies and their implications for modern day NGOs and civil society. The course will help you to understand complex and changing development policies. Examine the consequences of General Budget Support and the Paris Agenda, and see what this all means for NGOs and civil society both at national and international levels.

Course objectives for Website
· Review the history of international aid from the end of the Second World War, and look at the parallel history of civil society and in particular the growth of international work by NGOs
· Reflect on the concepts of development in their context from the point of view of economics and social development through to more recent ideas around rights/entitlements
· Look at the institutions behind international aid, including multi and bilateral agencies
· Review post cold war changes which led first to a rejection of the role of the state and then to a renewed focus on the role of the State through such mechanisms as General budget support, and supporting policies such as the Paris Agenda
· Examine the implications of such changes for civil society both at national and international levels
