If you are inspired by the ancient cultures of Greece, Rome and Persia, you'll love the A level course in Classical Civilisation.

This course offers an insight into the ancient world, concentrating on the civilisations of the Greeks and Romans from about 2000BCE to the 4th Century AD. From Greek architecture through to the rise and fall of Rome, for the next two years you'll be able to delve into the inner workings of what many people see as the dawn of civilisation.

What Will I learn on this Course?

You will be required to read classical text ( in the English translation), in the fields of History, Literature, Philosophy, Politics, Art, Architecture and Archaeology as well as developing research skills, producing written academic work, and contributing to group presentations and class discussions. There will be frequent opportunities for trips to museums, archaeological sites, exhibitions and lectures from leading academics throughout the course.

Course Content and Method of Assessment

First Year: AS Level

Homer's 'Odyssey':the story of Odysseus' journey home from the Trojan Wars. A tale of adventure, romance and cunning. A critical study of the odyssey and religious, cultural an social values implicit in the text.

Greek Architecture and Sculpture:a critical study of significant aspects of the development of Greek temple architecture, and the development in Greek free standing sculpture from 7th-4th centuries BCE.

Second Year: A2 Level

Roman Epic:Virgil's Aeneid weaves history and myth to create a tale of the founding of Rome. It indirectly examines the role of Emperor Augustus as Imperial Rome enters a new phase in its history. A critical exploration of selected books in the Aeneid in its religious, political, cultural and social context.

Persian Wars:A critical study of the Persian Wars 490-479 BC and the political, social and cultural values and concepts of the Greeks and Persians. The topic requires study in the areas of history and politics, literature, society and values.

After the Course?

A 'classical education opens the door to a whole world of opportunities. Many politicians, for example studied the classics, or people who work in the arts. Of course you could even find yourself digging through the remains of antiquity as an archaeologist or historian. The important thing is that you'll be following a thread which connects Greece, Persia and Rome to the lives we lead today.

Subject Combinations

The course programme follows that laid out by AQA, and no previous knowledge of Classical Civilisation, Greek or Latin is required. Classical Civilisation draws upon literature, politics, history, art and aesthtics, philosophy, law and anthropology.
