Classical Guitar Making

Course content:

This leading classical guitar making course introduces the craft of making traditional Spanish guitars. By the end of the course students will have built a minimum of two guitars in contrasting designs.

The tutors are all professional makers and the School has close links with players and other makers who visit to lead special workshops and discussions, as well as providing students with valuable professional feedback about their work.

This level 2 course introduces the craft of making classical guitars using the Spanish method. The course equips students with the knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to progress onto level 3. These skills include making; moulds and jigs, the neck, the soundboard and strutting, the rosette, the back and ribs, the fingerboard and bridge. All these components are then assembled and the finished instrument is French polished. Other units studied include: 'Materials and their Application', the 'History and Development of the Woodwind Instrument', 'Woodworking for Instrument Makers' and 'Health and Safety'. Students keep a written and visual record of their work that documents all the stages of design and construction.

Students will learn to manufacture specialist hand tools used in guitar making. This work leads to a level 1 NVQ qualification in Performing Engineering Operations.

Level: Level 2 Course Type: Full Time Entry RequirementsEntry Requirements:

Places at level 2 are only available to UK and EU residents. Applicants should hold a level 1 Cabinet Making qualification or have equivalent woodworking experience. Applicants should be competent users of tools and basic woodworking equipment. Places are awarded on the basis of potential, commitment and aptitude.

Interviews are held in the Spring and Summer terms each year. The interview day involves a short written and practical task and a review of woodworking skills. Ideally applicants should bring evidence of things they have made to interview. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential for students whose first language is not English.

Assessment and Progression:

Practical work is reviewed and assessed regularly. Three units are externally tested at the end of the year. The tool making work leads to an NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations

Successful completion of the level 2 course provides entry to Level 3 where more advanced skills are taught.

Duration:

The level 2 course is 1 year of full time study. Timetables typically run over 3 days per week to accommodate students who wish to remain resident further a field or have a job for part of the week.
