Codecs and Compression

Overview

This one day course will describe and compare the various different approaches to video and audio data compression. Through a mix of discussion and demonstrations delegates will get to see and hear the differences as various different compression systems are put through their paces.

Introduction:
Why use compression: An overview of the benefits & pitfalls

Audio Data Reduction:

• The two main approaches: Waveform-based & psychoacoustic-based
• MPEG audio, including layers, MP3, MP4 (AAC)
• Dolby systems, including Dolby Digital and Dolby E

Video Data Reduction:

• The two main approaches: DCT & wavelets
• Intra-frame & Inter-frame techniques
• JPEG & MJPEG
• The MPEG story
• JPEG2000
• Applications, including video recording & transmission, CBR, VBR
• Wrappers, containers & viewers

The session begins at 10.00 and finished around 17.00.
