Profile Our Cognitive Behavioural Therapy PGDip produces psychological therapists who are competent in the practice of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for patients affected by psychological disorders. It focuses predominantly on the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.

Course programme
The course comprises credits to the value of 120.
All candidates completing the Diploma shall take the following compulsory modules:
- PSY8047 Fundamentals of CBT
- PSY8048 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Anxiety Disorders
Completing and passing the Certificate level allows you to graduate or continue study to Diploma level in year two. Two pathways are available at Diploma level:
- Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Primary Care Applications pathway)
- Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Specialist Applications pathway)
All candidates completing the Diploma shall take the following compulsory module:
- PSY8049 CBT for Depression
- PSY8052 Professional Practice*
*Psy8052 is a non-credit bearing module, however each assessment contained in this module must be passed. The Pass/Fail marking scale is used for this module.
In addition, candidates following the Primary Care Applications pathway shall take the following compulsory module:
- PSY8050 Primary Care Applications
In addition, candidates following the Specialist Applications pathway shall take the following compulsory module:
- PSY8051 Specialist Applications
Entry Requirements
You may be entered for the course at the discretion of the Degree Programme Director provided that you:
- have entry qualifications that follow the criteria specified in the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP) Minimum Training Standards used to specify CBT practitioner accreditation in the UK.
You should be a graduate with an approved basic professional qualification in a mental health or related profession; be registered with a professional regulatory body, and have undertaken a minimum period of two years post-qualification training and experience
or
are a graduate in a relevant discipline with experience that meets BABCP Minimum Training Standards whose prior qualifications, training and experience are equivalent to an approved basic professional qualification in a mental health profession - are in stable employment and have your employer's support to:
- attend the teaching programme, and
- treat appropriate patients using CBT for the training purposes of the programme
- are fluent in spoken and written English. All candidates whose first language is not English will require a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in speaking and listening, 8.0 in academic reading and 6.0 in academic writing
Although most candidates are expected to work for health organisations (including NHS IAPT services), applications are also encouraged from education, forensic, voluntary and private sectors where there are relevant and equivalent prior qualifications and on-going provision of individual psychological therapies within the applicants' post.
