" Combined Engineering HNC/HND/BA (Hons) Degree OVERVIEW

At Coventry University Scarborough Campus there are three qualifications available to study. These are Combined Engineering HNC, Combined Engineering HND and Combined Engineering BSc (Hons) Degree. These can be studied individually or altogether to form the Combined Engineering BSc (Hons) Degree.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Combined Engineering HNC

The HNC in Combined Engineering is intended for those with a foundation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects and an interest in developing and applying their knowledge to a range of disciplines related to engineering.

This programme will support a range of students, including those looking to progress academically and those wishing to support or broaden their work based skills and learning.

The HNC programme is stage one of the Combined Engineering degree course. At this level, you will be introduced to the underpinning engineering principles and distinct modules in both electrical and mechanical engineering. Along with this you will develop design skills using industry standard graphic software.

A successful graduate of the HNC will be able to demonstrate engineering principles, solve simple, practical problems in an engineering context, show practical skills in a laboratory/workshop environment and have the educational preparation for a career as an engineering technician.

Combined Engineering HND

The HND programme is the second stage of the Combined Engineering degree course. At this level you will advance your knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical engineering and use microcontrollers across a wide range of applications. You will also look at contemporary issues facing tomorrow’s engineers including renewable energy sources.

This programme should help you to develop the knowledge and skills that will help prepare you to continue studies at BSc (Hons) degree level within Coventry University Scarborough Campus should you wish to gain a higher level academic qualification.

Combined Engineering BSc (Hons) Degree

The Combined Engineering degree has been designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills required by today’s professional engineers and support individuals looking to develop a career in engineering or undertake post-graduate, specialist study. It will also provide you with the capacity to engage effectively in the application of modern technologies to solve not only today’s problems but also the problems of tomorrow.

As a professional Engineer, you will need knowledge of engineering management. You will get the opportunity to study the field of mechatronics with specialist investigation into robotics. The final year project will enable you to select and develop an engineering topic of interest. The Combined Engineering BSc (Hons) degree has been designed to provide you with the skills you will need to excel in a modern engineering environment and the capacity to engage effectively in the application of modern technologies to solve today’s and tomorrow’s problems.

Honours level study will incorporate the aims listed above and a successful

graduate will demonstrate:

  • The ability to critically appraise an engineering scenario with a view to apply new technologies to improve efficiency or effectiveness
  • How to use an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to engineering studies
  • Developed practical skills to solve complex workshop based problems
  • Skills to appraise an engineering problem and discriminate between alternative, sustainable solutions
  • Key practical and transferable skills to enhance their long term employability or to progress to specialist, post graduate study
  • Criteria to achieve professional membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) at an appropriate status
WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Combined Engineering HNC (year 1)

  • Mathematical Principles for Engineers
  • Design and Engineering Graphics
  • Mechanical Engineering Science
  • Electrical and Electronic Science

On successful completion of this course you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The Fundamentals of Engineering – at this stage you will be introduced to the role of engineering within an organisation to develop an awareness of the requirements of engineering systems;
  • Mechanical Systems – you will start to investigate aspects of mechanical engineering principles and laws;
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering – you will be introduced to theories relating to electrical and electronic principles; digital circuits and laboratory skills as appropriate in electrical and electronic engineering;
  • Engineering Design – you will be introduced to design techniques and a range of software applications;
  • Mathematics – you will study concepts and modeling related to modern engineering analysis, design and development.

Combined Engineering HND (year 2)

  • Microcontroller Applications
  • Electrical Motors and Control Systems
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Renewable Energy Engineering

On successful completion of this course you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The Fundamentals of Engineering – you will also examine current trends in engineering, design consideration in the modern world and demonstrate practical knowledge within areas of maintenance and control systems;
  • Mechanical Systems – will develop your understanding of a range of mechanical engineering issues at the forefront of technology and demonstrate your application of engineering principles including finite element analysis and energy conservation;
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering – you will critically examine control systems, microprocessors and digital signal processing and apply the principles of software engineering design in simple lab-based projects;
  • Engineering Design – you will explore concepts and theories related to design which provide solutions to a wide variety of engineering problems;
  • Mathematics – you will apply mathematical principles to logic controllers and computer programming.

Combined Engineering BSc (Hons) Degree (year 3)

  • Robotics
  • Engineering Management
  • Mechatronics
  • Engineering Project

On successful completion of this course you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The Fundamentals of Engineering – including mathematical skills, mechanical and electrical systems, their importance, and how they function. In the final year you will develop a critical appreciation of different engineering applications in today’s society, developing a practical solution to a problem-based scenario;
  • Mechanical Systems – you will critically examine thermodynamic cycles and fluid mechanics and creatively apply their knowledge to more advanced subjects such as robotics and mechatronics;
  • Electrical/Electronics – you will utilise mathematical and practical skills to critically analyse a range of industry based problems;
  • Engineering Design – you will critically examine contemporary design solutions;
  • Mathematics – you will examine the application of mathematical theory to solve engineering problems is fundamental across the sector;

Project Development – the final year project will involve developing solutions to real world engineering problems. You will critically examine current trends in engineering design, production and management, and apply the principles in a project environment.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

These courses will be taught through a variety of methods – lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, textbooks, module webs, scenario-based learning sets, professional libraries and resources, journals and case studies, seminars, discussion forums and peer-to-peer learning.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment will take the form of individual and group coursework, which is vocationally relevant. The wide range of assessment techniques used at Coventry University Scarborough Campus will ensure that you have every opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in full.

There are no traditional final examinations to worry about. Instead, we will assess your learning through course work and phase tests. Assessments take place during and at the end of each six-week block.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

As a full-time student a normal learning block will mean that you get 18 hours of teaching each week in groups of approximately 25-50 students. Depending on the course you have chosen, you will attend morning (9.00-13.00) or afternoon (14.00-18.00) sessions. You will also need to attend one 2 hour tutorial each week.
