Locally I also feel much better equipped for my job at an engineering consultancy. The rigorous theoretical focus of TU Delft in the field of coastal engineering has given me a larger appreciation of research and also highlighted the importance of continuous learning especially when working in consulting. I can highly recommend the Erasmus Mundus programmes to any prospective students. It is likely to broaden your perspective of the world, show you much of Europe and challenge you academically.

This Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM) allows students to follow five different tracks depending on their area of study. Each track provides students with a unique experience that helps develop their understanding and knowledge in their field of study. Over the course of this two year program, students are given the opportunity to study at two different European universities.

About this course

Applicants must have a BSc degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, or in a relevant subject to the CoMEM program. This degree must signify at least 180 ECTS. The BSc cumulative Grade Point Average must be at 75% or higher of the scale maximum. Applicants must prove their proficiency in the English language.

Course programme

The curriculum for each track has been designed to create a balanced set of courses from the existing courses at each partner. The student builds the specific knowledge required for the MSc track and profile through courses, practical assignments and projects, complemented by internships and the supervised final MSc work. The courses are integrated, so prerequisite knowledge from different courses is assured and learning objectives are fulfilled.

  • TRACK 1 (NTNU): The Arctic Marine Coastal Engineering track provides students with the knowledge, skills and competencies for sustainable marine coastal development in the vulnerable Arctic region. The students will mostly acquire the knowledge on the environmental actions for the design of Arctic port, coastal and offshore structures at NTNU combined with the specialisation in coastal morphology at TU Delft.
  • TRACK 2 (City): Track 2 combines the CITY focus on maritime operations, technology, maritime management, business, economics, finance, law, planning and accounting, and the NTNU studies on the description of the ocean environment and port and coastal issues with UPC's courses on sustainable coastal development for natural ecosystems and human safety aspects.
  • TRACK 3 (SOTON): The programmes at NTNU, UPC and SOTON in the Environment and Management Track are complimentary and allow a progression from a solid foundation in coastal engineering developed at NTNU and reinforced at UPC towards an emphasis on soft methods and solutions at SOTON.
  • TRACK 4 (TUD): The Coastal Engineering Track has its focus on the hard Northern European coastal engineering provided by the programmes at NTNU and TU Delft, but distinguishes itself from Track 1 by the inclusion of soft engineering provided with the SOTON programme in the third semester. Graduates from this track will thus have a basic coastal engineering competence and in addition instead of a competence in marine arctic engineering technology a competence in soft engineering.
  • TRACK 5 (UPC): Track 5 of CoMEM follows the engineering and environment ("working with nature") approach right from the beginning. It has been designed so students achieve a specialization by combining engineering projects fundamentals (NTNU and UPC) with environmental and managerial skills (SOTON).
